Virginia Chamber Orchestra Community Outreach
The award winning Special Audience Outreach offers dramatic evidence that listening to fine music is not an elitist activity, but rather an experience which can touch and lift the spirits of all who listen. With assistance from foundations and corporations--and in consultation with directors of twenty area facilities--fifty tickets per concert are made available to people in alternative housing, teens at risk, single parents and their children who need assistance, and those members of minority groups who are in need of a helping hand. VCO Volunteers, with assistance from churches and other community organizations, provide a hot meal before or after the concert free of charge. This combination of dinner and entertainment provides a unique opportunity for the special audience guests to interact with people outside of their facilities. The response has been inspiring to all involved. Arlington based Community Residencies, Inc. bestowed the 2002 Good Neighbor Award to this outreach program.
